1 "My father, Joshua Meservy Jr., was the first son of Joshua Meservy Sr. and Jeanne Robert. They were converts to the Mormon church from the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel. My father was born at St. Heliers, a little French village on the Isle of Jersey. They were of pure Norman stock. He spent his early life on a farm there and was also trained to be an excellent carpenter. When he was about 18 years old (1851), John Taylor, a Mormon missionary, came to their town preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. He first saw my grandmother working in her garden while her husband was away at work. He asked if he might have a turnip from the garden and suggested he could help her. My grandparents made the elder welcome, and in August 1851, the family members were baptized. There arose such a great prejudice against the family that they could hardly give their property away when they decided to emigrate to Utah. In January 1853, the family sailed from Liverpool on the Galconda for New Orleans. They landed there in April 1853 after a hard journey, beset by strong winds and foul weather. Passengers had to carry their own food. My uncle, John Meservy, got a job working on the boat, so he ate with the captain. He asked if he might have the unused food for his mother and family, and there was enough for all the Mormons traveling on the vessel. After the group landed in Ne Orleans, they went up the Mississippi River to Keokuk, Iowa. They camped there until they rounded up animals and wagons, and supplies for the trek westward. They joined Joseph W. Young's Company and after many hardships and adventures, arrived in Utah 10 October 1853.

The Meservy family first moved to Tooele, then to Santaquin, and then to Goshen. About 1860 they went with the first settlers to Franklin, Idaho. My grandfather, my father, and all the rest of the Meservy family were active in building this new community. My grandfather was noted for his fine carved pieces of furniture. He was a real artist in this line.
